Description
Wood rosin seems to be the most popular and widely used product of wood processing. The easiest way of wood rosin manufacture is just distilling of turpentine steam from resin. This sort of wood rosin is called gum rosin and is a straight-run product of natural resin.
In the process of manufacture two types of wood rosin are differentiated: wet process wood rosin and tall oil rosin.
Wet process wood rosin is obtained by extracting resin from softwood with benzine. Tall oil rosin is the result of crude tall oil fractionation.
Usage
Wood rosin is widely used in industry: lacquer coloring matter, construction, cable industry, chemical rubber manufacture, medicine, to name but a few.
Wood rosin is insoluble in water but freely soluble in many organic solvents: spirit, acetone, toluene, benzine, and others. The surprising thing is the ability of petrochemical and wood processing products to substitute and complement each other. When wood rosin is used in paint-and-varnish industry it gives the product such properties as: enhanced adhesion to contact material, better water resistance, and improved material viscosity.
In extracting wood rosin with alkaline solutions sulfate or rosin soap is obtained. This type of soap can be applied as an emulsifier in producing emulsion, or as a stabilizing additive to a finished emulsion (as a rule, this is the manufacture of emulsion rubber, though there are cases of adding wood rosin to water-bitumen emulsion).
The use of wood rosin in the manufacture of foam generating agents is also known. Such solutions consist as a rule of wood rosin, soda and jointer’s glue. These foam formers can be used in the manufacture of foam concrete. It is notable that the latter can be obtained with your own hands and later used to produce the necessary products. Here you can watch an interesting related video.
When buying wood rosin it is very important to fully understand what you expect from the product. Every sort of wood rosin has its own sphere of application. Thus, in medicine only gum rosin can be used. It is characterized by high chemical activity; no organic solvents of benzine type are used in its manufacture, it is harmless for medical purposes.
On the contrary, tall oil rosin is manufactured at large plants through fractionation, with rectifying columns; this is an extensive manufacturing process, the price of tall oil rosin, as compared with that of gum rosin, being quite moderate. However, this sort of rosin can be manufactured with specified characteristics which predetermine its further use.
Wet process wood rosin is of darker color, as a rule it contains more contaminants than gum rosin. It is widely used as an additive in the manufacture of paints, lacquer, pigments, polymers, etc.
When making your order don’t forget to specify general characteristics of wood rosin, its types and sphere of further application. We are going to put our full effort to choose the best possible variant for you.
